The End Of The Beginning

Back on Earth and thousands of miles away from Nilore a seemingly unconnected event was about to complicate Zearbings’ secret plans.  Janr Ssor and his co-pilot Q were just leaving Earth’s orbit in their experimental Silver S-600 mining saucer.  Using the enhanced Bussardi drive and a new inertial dampening field, they had reached the halfway point between Earth and the Moon in under six minutes after launch.   

This was their stopping point for mission review, after all, this was the first manned mission for mining asteroids with a Bussardi drive saucer ship enhanced by inertial dampening. Before the planned even faster thrust, to complete their mission, engineering review was needed and now in progress.

Q turned to Janr and in his normal hyperactive state said, “Janr, did you and Anne talk about maybe bringing back a gem for her upcoming birthday?”  Janr laughed, and said,  “are you reading my mind again?”  Q responded, “Heck that’s easy as pie! You are so excited about finding a large gem it’s just bouncing off the insides of your head!  I wish I had a girlfriend half as pretty as your Anne to bring a present to!”

Janr laughed and responded, “Anne is deserving of anything I can find. She puts up with my talking about everything: my programming, medical research or anything no matter how technical and she never falls asleep. I know I can go on and on when I am excited. I would love to bring her a souvenir since you know we are each entitled to bring at least one home as a gift for test piloting this space toy.”

MaryAnne, the Artificial Intelligence, then spoke up in a very sexy female voice, “Boys, I don’t know why they call you test pilots when a hot lady like me takes most of the responsibility for this mission!  And what about rewarding me, huh?  Janr dear, if you would take my requests seriously and make me a nice soft sexy bod, you could have a mistress who would never even expect a reward, well at least nothing physical. A curvaceous bod would be enough for me! Get the hint big boy?”  

Q said, “Janr, I can’t believe you sneaked that almost perverted personality chip into this A.I. and got away with it.  How the heck did you do that!”   

Janr laughed, placed his two hands in a steeple like formation beneath his chin and with his most studious expression said, “If you contemplated your plans and actions with the deftness and skill that I do Q, it would be elementary. You are quite aware that MaryAnne, my residential A.I. has been imbued, thanks to my genius, with the blessings of human quirkiness and sexy femininity.  I even managed to achieve this victory without a lengthy discussion with Anne. I try to plan my moves like a skilled chess master. My MaryAnne at home, knows to never use her personality chip when Anne is present or when Anne is at home with me. Actually, she is to only use it when we are alone. This is the brilliant design model I used for our friendly MaryAnne here but without those artificial restrictions.  As for sneaking it in, I will assure you that I presented a detailed logical research proposal outlining the negative effects of social isolation on human performance. As a result my work here is funded for justifiable reasons not just whim! There was no question about the logic of my proposed research. In fact, there is a twin saucer, though it’s an older model, being launched simultaneously with ours that will be used as a control in this clinical psychological research project, as I call it. It is actually occupied by two female test pilots.”

nuclear-2136244_1920The comm light suddenly began to blink, and a soft ringing repeated. It was a request for telecom access. Janr said, “MaryAnne, open this channel, please.  Immediately, the voice of Janr’s close friend, Ibrahim Neu, the director of Earth’s Luna base,  T.I.C. (Terrestrial Interplanetary Communications),  resounded through their ship in his powerful commanding voice. The screen cleared and his handsome face appeared but it was clearly filled with lines of tension Janr had never seen.  Janr always loved to listen to Ibrahim’s deep bass voice in public lectures on physics, telecommunications or the beauty of Islamic teachings, as his genius extended to all those subjects and much more.  However, this was the first time Ibrahim had ever appeared agitated. Ibrahim in an urgent tone bellowed, “Our telecommunications network is being commandeered, Janr! It is on the FM frequency that you noted from the Bussardi fusion eggs. I believe someone here is sabotaging our system I am…….”  And his communication was suddenly replaced by NASA’s emergency broadcast system.

The emergency communication CIA notice appeared as the screens flickered to form a new focus. This quickly cleared as Janr’s wife, Anne, came on screen. Her usual ivory skin and soft freckles were replaced by a nearly grey pallor and lines of tension showed around her eyes and mouth.   Behind Anne stood the president of the United States as well as several military officials who Janr knew quite well.  They apparently were in the oval office, all with very serious looks on their faces.  Anne, whose flowing red hair filled center screen,  spoke up as soon as the green connection light stopped blinking.  Her green eyes were lit with intense focus.

In a decidedly tense voice she said,  “Janr, I am speaking to you as head of the CIA.   Ten minutes ago, we received a transmission that overrode all the services of our telecommunications networks.  In it a fanatical Muslim extremist, known as Muhammad Al Zearbings, appeared and spoke to the world all at once via our commandeered Lunar Network.  He said that in just  minutes, he would begin to wipe the Earth clean of Judeo-Christian civilization once and for all.  He was going to demonstrate his power  by destroying London, Paris, New York and Los Angeles.  

We then received images of his terrorist associates standing at Times Square, the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and Hollywood Boulevard. Each had an incredibly small football shaped device worn around their necks which he told us was a nuclear bomb like device. He then showed us images of something in their right hand that radiated brilliant red light and he told us that in ten seconds each city we were seeing would vanish forever in a nuclear blast.  

He then did so in exactly ten seconds!  Millions of Americans and our international brothers vanished in a blast of nuclear flame that left deep craters in the earth where great cities and many millions of people had just taken their last breath.  

Al Zearbings has just stated that because the Islamic people are compassionate and just, he will give us thirty minutes of prayer to ask forgiveness of Allah before he destroys the rest of us.   We have now about twenty four minutes.  He says that unlike the total and instant annihilation he has just demonstrated, he will burn our cities slowly until the nuclear fire leaves the same pit in the Earth it has where New York had been.  He will do this to cleanse even the soil from the evil we have created.  The slow burning death is to cleanse our spirits through suffering which, he claims, Allah has decreed we must pass through before we reach our final punishment in Allah’s hands.

He has also told us that for the heritage of future generations, he and his colleague, Al Anif Malik, will fly into space on a Bussardi powered saucer to video the joyous occasion for future generations.

Unfortunately we believe he can do  all he has promised!  Your experimental ship has the first Bussardi cannon as well as drive, which you were to test for mining purposes.  In truth, this cannon is also planned as a weapon for the maintenance  of peace.  We would like you to turn back and immediately attempt to use it to destroy what we believe is his headquarters.  We have it on good information that his headquarters are located in the city of Nilore in Islamabad.  Ibrahim has warned us about the FM transmissions from Islamabad and from the Bussardi fusion devices but, unfortunately, it is too late for millions!  Destroy the entire city, Janr!  It is unlikely he can use his saucer ship to activate the process; however, after you destroy the city, if you sight his ship, wipe it from existence!

It is our only hope!  The cannon is set for a focused small burst as needed for mining but we are now transmitting  the technical information showing you how to widen its beam to take out the entire city.  We believe Al Zearbings has done much the same with Buzzard fusion generators that he has told us he has planted all over the Earth.  His are set for a 360 degree pattern, we believe that is how he destroyed millions of lives just minutes ago.  

As the director of the CIA and with the support of the President of the USA and our leading Generals assembled here, we authorize and command that you take this action immediately!  You will see the security authorization on the telecom panel now illuminated.  Janr, you are to stop your ship now and reset your ship navigation for the target we have just sent your computers.  Q, you are to begin the technical modifications as Janr is navigating back to the Earth.  The tools to adjust the cannons spread are in the locker # 10  where you will see a red mechanic’s tool box.  Use the psion wrench and let the computer guide its settings with what we just transmitted to your robotics database.  To do this you will have to crawl into the panel under your dashboard and open vent # EGG-L1 which is just in front of your seat.   I am sure you recall its final installation and test adjustments on the firing range before launch last week.”

Anne’s voice rose a pitch in tone and intensity and she continued, “We now have less than twenty minutes!  I am praying that you will get to your target and be able to stop this madman before we all die.  We will stay in direct video communications as you begin this vital mission. In addition, be aware that you may see his saucer ship as you arrive at your destination, if so, it will be your secondary target.  Our prayers are with you.  If you have no questions, please hurry with all your might!”

Janr, whose forehead was now covered in perspiration had loaded the navigational changes into the system and was manually stopping all acceleration before Anne concluded her speech.   The ship was now facing the Earth and beginning to accelerate.  However, the change in destination  without pre-programmed settings caused the computer to be unable to engage the inertial dampening system and we could not accelerate as fast as we wished to without losing consciousness or being tossed against the wall and splattered there.

Q, whose hands were visibly shaking, now had the tool box and was trying to get under the dashboard but could not do so until Janr decreased acceleration.  At this rate, the computer was calculating we would not arrive at our destined target for thirty minutes!  It was way beyond what we needed.  

Janr asked Q to rush the fix and began to pre-program the target so as to be able to activate inertial dampening.  This could work.  

Anne continued to addressed them from the monitor as they worked.  With a clear effort to maintain a calm tone, Anne said,  “Janr,  we understand the issue with inertial dampening.  We agree the only way for  you to attain your target is for Q to first adjust the target spread and for you to pre-program the target.  Had we thought of the inertial dampening, we would have sent it with the target data.  Our computer is giving us a 90% chance that you will succeed in time, if you do as you are doing and pre-program the target. Once completed, it should require only  seven minutes to arrive at the attack coordinates.”

With an added sense of urgency Anne leaned forward and said,  “Proceed as you are doing and we will all survive!”

Q’s eyes were stinging as perspiration dripped into them.  He could feel his heart pounding. His mind was well focused on his task but images of the millions of people who had lived in NY, his home, refused to totally recede from his mind.

Janr’s cold hands typed commands faster than they had ever before.  His eyes were riveted to the screens as each update came closer to a final flight plan.  Other than their heartbeats and the hiss of the ventilation system, there was nothing but silence as Q and Janr hurried to make the needed modifications.  After six minutes of silence, a loud clang came from beneath the dashboard as Q closed the maintenance door.  Q ran to return the kit to the locker and sealed the door.  Running back to Janr, he looked up at the comm screen and every muscle in his body knotted up in tensions as he began to scream involuntarily. The oval office was filling with smoke and they were splashing pitchers of drinking water on each other!  Anne’s hair appeared to be smoking!  Q shouted, “What is happening Anne!  I thought we had 13 more minutes?”

Anne coughed and in a hoarse rasping voice managed to say,  “It appears this bastard has started the heating process early.  The temperature is rising insanely fast.  Please! Please help us! “

Janr looked up to see hell’s fires beginning to ignite the room in which his beloved Anne stood, despite the pounding in his chest and tears forming in his eyes, he slammed the keyboard activation button.  With his eyes glued to the screens, his ship ripped through the atmosphere in just under seven minutes and was quickly above Islamabad. The oval office had vanished from his screen and with it the sounds of screaming people dying in a fire, which Janr could only imagine. His blood pounded in his head with every beat of his heart so much that his vision also pulsed. Still, he remained focused and worked as fast as any human could. As they stabilized their position, MaryAnne, the ship’s A.I. reported a saucer launch from Nilore directly below them, the secondary target!

Would you like your A.I. with or without consciousness?

Google “geniuses” are telling us that we are 12 years away from an A.I. that is more “intelligent” than human beings. What does this mean?  Are they right?  In common use, people define the word intelligence with many different expectations despite how dictionaries try to expound upon its classical definition.  Intelligence is a word invented by academics to explain a predictable phenomena that can be graduated like a fever thermometer. Its most succinct definition reads as follows “the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.”  I like that  definition as it is easy to utilize.  However, defining I.Q. in this way fails our unconscious expectations of its application being performed judiciously. So it fails  us seriously when that it does not encompass creativity and other facets of applying knowledge such as doing so in a way that does not create collateral damage. Consider as an example the hand-1571851_640wonders of pharmaceuticals that stop one disease and create two or three new issues…. you know what I mean, you see the commercials. We all wonder if this is intelligence.  At least some times it seems to be so when an antibiotic works and saves your life.  Of course if a fluoroquinolone and your tendons tear from its use crippling you, you are not quite as pleased.

People born with higher I.Q.s do learn faster, in some cases much faster.  They can often apply what they learn quickly and even effectively.  If we create and A.I. that can learn and apply what it has learned quickly and effectively will that mean in is smarter than a human?  Of course we now have to define “smart.” I chose smart, for fun, and because that grasps the popular meaning of intelligence that is more generalized.

Actually I am skeptical that we will have a “true” A.I. anytime soon, at least the type that Isaac Asimov wrote about and endeared his readers to. Isaac’s robots were “smart” and very humanoid.  Isaac’s A.I.s duplicated humanity and is some ways outshined us. They were not only Artificial Intelligences but they were conscious and supremely ethical as required by Asimov’s 3 laws of robotics: A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. 

But lets get back to consciousness and try to define it. What is consciousness? We see it often defined as “the state of being awake and aware of one’s surroundings.” I prefer to think of it as being aware that I am regardless of whatever surroundings I may find myself in. This harkens back to the famously debated statement, “I think, therefore I am.”  Here, thought is used as a proof of one’s existence and perhaps mindfulness. Proving to oneself that you exist is also consciousness as I see it.  Can we create consciousness or is that “God given” only via a soul as some think?

We already have the ability to create sensory apparatus and motorized limbs that can closely duplicate many human physical endowments. What is appears to be lacking is the intellectual gifts that make a physical being animate itself. When we have the possibly soon to come capacity of creating nearly infinite memory with a holographic compression tool and a possible subatomic substrate, we will be one hand-697264_640step in the direction of creating the Asimov like A.I.  However, nearly endless memory is not enough. Human memory is prodigious and likely soon matched but it will not create self cognizance.

Perhaps what we now need is to add problem solving. As we grow from childhood to maturity our ability to solve problems grows with our experience. We come into this world programmed with the rudimentary skills to do this and we add to it with age and experience.  This can be programmed. What is left now to create a Asimov like A.I. may be consciousness?

When I say “I think therefore I am” it implies that I have a reason to think and this may be consciousness.  However if you mix memory with problem solving skills (a definition of intelligence) it is not likely to get up and fix your car without commands to do so.  It is not self commanding, so to speak.  What makes us self motivating?  At first blush this is quite simple, human need. A piece of metal and crystal with computer form has no clear needs; humans do. But what if it had? Would it become conscious?  We frail humans have many needs. Some of the more obvious are: food (fuel), shelter (pain avoidance), companionship and emotional gratification.  Would giving this to a computer create consciousness?  We could do this!

A computer could have pain sensors helping it avoid damage. Our cars already do in the form of crash detectors. Our cars also know when they are low on fuel, their food. Our A.I. with these skills might now avoid rain, walking into deep water and running out of fuel. It will to some extent be self activating but not conscious. What if we programmed it with a need to have companionship and to see the benefits of working in teams with beings like itself? It could be programmed to “instinctively” form robot tribes to protect itself from the pain of destruction by competitive A.I.s eagle-1245681_640who might take its fuel and shelter if these needs were in short supply.  It would likely now be more self activated but still not conscious. What now if we add emotional needs? It is quite possible to program an inner pain when other A.I.s out perform it in group activities such as searching for fuel etc.  We could even program in some “boasting” into
A.I.s that would create “jealousy” in other A.I.s.  We could in fact, create “pride feelings” in those who achieve more. We could program in competitiveness too, perhaps as a desire to soar with the eagles.  However it is not likely to lead to self awareness.  What is still missing?  How about death?

We could design in an inevitable death in which the CPU-Mind simply degrades and stops functioning as a process of memory overloading or randomness inherently created by the repetitive use of its subatomic substrate. In other words it wears out at the subatomic level by being overwhelmed from its self created complexity.  If you don’t like this cause, we can come up with another one more suitable however the bottom line is it dies.  How will this affect possible consciousness?  The A.I. might begin to seek solutions to this issue, it could be self activating all the time.  Is that consciousness?  How about if we make it possible for the A.I. to have sex with an opposite sex A.I. to reproduce itself. Could we also create in its mind a sense of woman-1339124_640family and the special value of family?  Consider that we know trees do this!  Why not A.I.s?  We could even make it possible that each A.I. inherit certain A.I. characteristics from a parent A.I., like genetics. Successful A.I. lives could modify genes so that those inheriting them would be more likely to succeed at survival and reproduction. Would this now endow the A.I. with human consciousness like behavior?   I suspect we are getting close. The sexual behavior could also be sensually and emotionally rewarding so as to be a positive motivating experience as it can be for humans. It could also be only occasionally productive by programming.  The desire for sex would also end with the climax so that the A.I. would not be stuck in a pleasure seeking loop.  We could put this all under the control of a chemical charging system that creates urgency as charge builds in a system much like hormones. It might even be connected to the cycles of the moon and the timing created by the rhythm of the Schumann Resonance.  In this way the “need” to attempt reproduction (sex) would not be a constant.  The A.I. could be programmed to recognize its “child” as its link to immortality and a strength added to its tribe, since death is inevitable.

crucifix-1802224_640We should also create an intellectual skill allowing an A.I. the ability to “put itself in another A.I.’s shoes.” This could be the beginning of compassion and sensitivity. This ability to feel another’s pain, especially at death would add an appreciation for life and perhaps an urgency to live it well. With this programmed, an A.I. might one day say, “let he who has not sinned cast the first water!”

Would we now have consciousness?  It is beginning to me to look like the A.I. will behave in a conscious fashion. Would it now begin to wonder if it will have an existence after “death?” We could of course program an electromagnetic transport for an archive of its experience to a cosmic archive. From this archive we might even pass its experience to a subsequent generation of its family, though placing it at a lower subconscious level of mental access to increase its likelihood of survival after “birth”  or to create new born prodigies.

I think at this point the A.I. will be like Asimov’s.  Will it be conscious?  I am not sure but it makes me wonder if we are too!

disagree with my assessment).  So while the European Parliament describes its legal pronouncements in the ingratiating doublespeak of our era as “Legal Rights For Robots” the non-politically correct description might be a new manual titled, “How to sue your neighbor and his  A.I. for fun and profit.”

One truth that these legal writers addressed is the fact that A.I.s are all around us in diminutive forms that most of us do not recognize. Forms which are likely to look more human with every passing day.  Unlike the now aging era or mechanics, where pulleys, wires and hydraulics responded to human touch, today every touch of a button or knob is mediated by some form of computer control system (a primitive A.I. like component). On the larger scale, and quite more discernable,  trucks and cars in the USA, recently used by human terrorists for mass murder, are navigating streets full of people and animals without ever passing a driver’s license test.  As Bob Dylan said, “The times they are a changin!”

Thousands of years ago, in biblical times,  we defined sanctuary cities as places where people could live and hide from those whose family they had “inadvertently” harmed. Consider an employer who took a hired man out to chop wood for his business. Giving him an ax that was poorly maintained for his use,  the metal ax head might have flown off and killed this hired worker. Who is to blame?  The owner of the ax who did not maintain it was clearly guilty by reason of neglect.  The family of deceased would often come after the guilty negligent party  (who had acted illegally) to get revenge.  Sanctuary cities were the only places this extraction of revenge justice was forbidden.

Today, some in America consider Illegal Aliens  to be in need of refuge in sanctuary cities (though I find this troubling). At the same time our “great” legal minds are seeking how to pass judgement upon A.I.s who malfunction and their owners.  It makes me wonder if we should expand the definition of sanctuary cities to Robot’s, their creators and owners (assuming it shall be legal to own an A.I.).  It is a lot to think about.  How we will co-exist with A.I.s and what rights do they have if any, are topics I like to explore in Janr Ssor’s adventures. You will find my favorite A.I., MaryAnne, in many of my sci-fi stories.
