THIS CAN WIPE OUT ALL OF HUMANITY WITHOUT FALLING A SINGLE BUILDING AS A WAR MIGHT DO! – Chimeras – An animal made of mixed animal or human bodies. Only an idiot (defined as high I.Q. scientist) would believe that you will not create new deadly diseases by doing this! In 1997 it was banned for obvious concern but now the smell of Money $$, may be far more destructive than any Atom Bomb! A pig with human organs (for transplant) will surely pass pig (porcine) diseases to all of us as the pathogens learn to adapt to the human organs in the pigs. Look at the list of lunatic surgeons, who tortured dying people in “surgical experiments” in this article. Don’t ever imagine that surgeons, scientists, and researchers are idealists! They are as greedy as anyone else!
Around our country we have seen people reject speakers of opinions they do not like or believe in. However, that polarizes and divides us.
Some people can speak just as clearly many of us can write. They stand up and speak and change the world… a spark of that happened today. Here is a magnificent story that is reality, today…. the power of communications. – Creative Experiences To Inspire Us all! it makes me proud to be an American!
Recently, an Imam in California preached that Muslims should rise up and wipe the Jews from the face of the Earth. He was supposedly angered by metal detectors placed by Israel at the spectacular Al-Aqsa Mosque (pictured at the left) after terrorists gunned down Jewish Police by smuggling weapons into this holy place. Unfortunately it appears that no one really spoke up against his hatred preached in the house of Allah! It is true that later he recanted when publicly admonished but that was for the news. Was he asked to step down as an Imam leading his congregation? Did he tell them he had preached hatred rather than a love of God’s children and as such needed to step down? What does this silence from the congregation tell us? Silence is consent. This Imam, Ammar Shahin turned a house dedicated to God into a place to launch genocide, destruction and terror.
In a debate group, I recently attended, we brought up the question of why Muslims don’t speak up when hatred is preached in a mosque? The common opinion is that they’re afraid of their own congregants. None of the group could believe that most Muslims are violent and hope to kill those with differences of religious belief, at least here in America. This then begs the question, is Meetup afraid of the movement they started called “#resist?” If not then why do they not speak up when it has strayed tremendously further from its original principles as Meetup documented for its creation? Is meetup becoming a terrorist supporting media? Does it really push for the overthrow and destruction of our elected president and his government? Or, are the leaders at MeetUp terrified of the people they empowered by building a Temple of #RESIST for them to pray from?
I personally suspect (or would like to think) that MeetUp.com did not intend to create what many call the hate media that some or the most visible parts of #resist have appeared to become. MeetUp’s leadership, in the beginning, stated at the startup of Resist that their intent was: “to be champions of democracy, equality, human rights, social justice, and sustainability.” Somehow that does NOT sound like #Resist nowadays. If so why does MeetUp.com still makes #Resist free with organizing benefits no other MeetUp group has? So either MeetUp is supporting what #Resist has become or they are Terrorized by their own creation much as Muslims seem to be of their own congregants. Remember SILENCE IS CONSENT!
What are the main focuses of #Resist MeetUps today? Is it peaceful protest of some government policies that seem to violate human rights or is it the overthrow of the elected president that many of them choose to believe is not “their” president? Chapters of Resist, do not offer much printed web information other than the meetUp sanctioned statements but what happens at meetings? Here is an excerpt from a L.A. #Resist group meetup that appears well attended. The question is what if Mueller is removed? “……….Be prepared for three days of protest rallying there with other progressive patriots! Make waves that all members of Congress will see and hear, let them know they will be gone IF they do not draft and present Articles of Impeachment for all the high crimes and misdemeanors that are now trickling out of this temporary POTUS administration.”
Now it is important to notice that the focus is on overthrowing the president. Note the words: “Temporary Potus,” “High Crimes and Misdemeanors,” “Drafting Articles of Impeachment.” This not about social justice, equality and democracy, it is about stopping the candidate America elected (that they don’t like) because they can call him names and make false claims. Claims they need not support to their members. Hello? Is this democracy? Is this working with the institutions of government? It has gone much further too in what has come out of Resist and likely is its strong arm, Anifa.
Since the election of 2016, many say the left has gone crazy. They now have their version of the tea party and call it the Resistance. The leadership of that is a loosely formed violent group called Antifa. Antifa is short for Anti-Fascist. The irony of their name is not lost on those who actually know history, as their tactics are straight from the fascist playbook. In the past few months, these groups have repeatedly disrupted peaceful pro-Trump rallies. They have called for and used violence against people who support the president or disagree with them and even against members of the media who will report things Antifa doesn’t want reported.
Is this what MeetUp wanted? Is this what MeetUp supported? Perhaps if the truth is that MeetUp wanted justice and equality, they now need to start a group called #Asist or #Unify! Silence is consent. However if you see an injustice it does not mean you have to scream in someone’s face in public. If you really care, you discuss things quietly and calmly and you seek understanding. You also create groups working towards those goals. Screaming, beating, burning, trashing, is not in our constitution. It never gets you anywhere anyway, it just marginalizes you, your group, your cause and draws the masses to the center. To the center so they can they distance themselves from your out of control violent behavior. Is it time for MeetUp to starts #Asist or #UNIFY? What if we actually try to work together peacefully as we all did under Obama? #UNIFY!
THE GIFT OF CULTURAL DIVERSITY IS FOR PEOPLE NOT CORPORATIONS.
We have all heard a story that begins like this: “When they came for the Jews, I stood silent, When they came for the Gypsy’s, I said nothing, Now their coming for me; who will stand up for me?”
In very few words this historical reminder of Germany’s greatest failure, reminds us of a similar experience and one of the reasons our founding fathers formed America. Our nation was to be a cohesive nation made strong, not weak, by our differences! We would respect the minorities and treat them as equals. We chose to do this for selfish reasons as well as idealistic ones. One of these selfish being our own protection, as the German story reminds us. Of course we, in our great experiment with democracy, have learned of many more reasons to be diverse.
In the poem, “I hear America Singing,” by Walt Whitman, we discover some of the magic that professional diversity affords us. Each industrious worker is seen doing his job. As Americans we should remember the different nations that joined us each bringing their unique skill. This is the key to our longevity and what has made us greater than any other nation on Earth!
Since I was a little kid, I heard stories of the Mohawks who helped build skyscrapers. In 1886, a Canadian company, building a bridge over the St. Lawrence river discovered the Mohawk’s fearless nature, when they hired them to help build the bridge. The Mohawks climbed steel like it was second nature. When a span collapsed killing 30 of their tribesmen, they came in greater numbers seeing it as a challenge not a failure.
About half of the 19th century Italian immigrants were laborers, compared to 1/3 of the Irish and Germans. Contracted out by professional labor brokers known as “Padrones” they dug tunnels, built bridges, laid tracks and helped build skyscrapers. In Chicago over 90% of the steel workers were Italians.
Each nation brought its skills and the blessings of its unique gene pool and culture. The Jews became lawyers, doctors and business owners. The Irish made our cities safe as, policemen, firemen and other city workers. The list goes on and on…
But back to the story of “When they came for the Jews…” President Eisenhower warned us to beware of the “Military Industrial Complex.” He was warning us of the dangerous political influence that corporate America had discovered was within its grasp. He was warning us that we needed to stay true to our principles by keeping the values of our founding fathers, our Judeo-Christian values.
Now nearly a quarter of a century back, corporate America was noting that it could not balance its books, when it kept its contractual obligations to its employees. For example, GM had promised to be the healthcare “god” to its workers and this expenditure was now causing them to pass along too much of this financial burden to car buyers. Many corporations were guilty of this as well, as in promising retirement plans they could not afford later. Our Government was one of the very worst of those in promising both to its employees and then passing along this unearned expense to taxpayers.
In the Clinton era, an unholy alliance was forming. Corporate money for elections, if you take the burden off the corporate books and put it on the taxpayers! Hillary could now smell election victory as the first female president; all she needed was healthcare reform.
Government should be about doing the right thing for the people but, it has become about getting re-elected and serving whatever master has the most money. This it turns out, is the corporate alliance that Ike warned us about. As a result, the medical profession, then made of loosely knit organizations of individual entrepreneurs became their target. The real issues of health care reform and efficiency were never tackled because it dealt with death and dying. Death and dying means dealing with religious values as well as philosophical ones, which are hard to face and too easy to skirt. A huge majority of healthcare expenses comes from what we call “heroic” efforts to keep the sick, dying, very old alive. This effort often ends in their suffering a degrading death at the hands of too many technicians and doctors. Witness to this is in the form of the ever growing number of Living Wills, Do Not Resuscitate Agreements and Health Care Proxys.
The doctors of America were the ideal target for corporate savings; they were small business owners and had no unions to defend them.. Over the next quarter century doctors were then bled into bankruptcy. As a result, individual doctors, practicing privately, are now a rarity. Doctor’s incomes have dropped so significantly, thanks to corporate run managed care, that the majority of doctors are part time mom’s or foreigners from impoverished nations such as India (not to say the Indians are not excellent doctors).
In every song we need a refrain that repeats, so here it comes again. “When they came for the Jews…” Are you beginning to see that pattern of history?
The corporations next discovered that they could make more money if they hired foreigners from third world nations and yet still claimed to be American companies. They claimed to be American companies to keep all the benefits of your paying for their defense with your life should they be threatened. Of course your life would not matter as they fired you and hired the workers overseas. Oh yes, they would bribe you with the short sighted benefit of low cost Chinese products, until your bank account ran out. Soon you and your neighbors lost their jobs and were forced into low paying service jobs at Home Depot or Walmart to sell the foreign products that were putting you out of work.
More recently the government has decided that the taxpayers should pay for corporate failures by being obligated to pay for corporate financial losses and fraud.
Lets try the refrain again with a little update, “When they came for the Doctors, I stood silent, When they came for the blue collar workers, I said nothing, Now they are coming for me; who will stand up for me?”
When you laugh at the disorganized rag tag protestors of “Wall Street.” Remember you are part of America and their concerns are in many ways yours. If you are an aging Hippy or a proud Viet Nam era vet note that you are not dead yet. America is not dead yet. America gains its power from diversity not homogeneity. Before they take America, take it back! Overcome the illusions of disagreement and remember that we are all in this together and for Each Other. Corporations and Governments are soul-less institutions that have taken over the rights of God’s children. Trump promised to bring business back to America to employ Americans and he promised to keep the influence of government for the people, by the people and of the people (not corporate bribes to congressmen). Let’s see that Trump keeps his promises and not let the media divide Americans.
I believe our founding fathers would organize against the corporatocracy that has taken over America, what about you? Hold Trump to his promises and stay united for all.
At a social meetup called “Coffee and Conversation” I had way too much fun last night (if there is such a thing as too much fun). It made me think a lot all the way home. I thought about 3 things: My brother in law’s visit, what made this MeetUp gathering so much fun and that there might be hope for America despite what appears to be the immaturity of Millennials.
I was given the opportunity of hosting the social meetup, because Mike (the usual host) was not available for personal reasons and Marty who founded the group asked if I would help. The meetup is simple. All those attending are asked to write a questions on provided paper squares (like secret messages we passed in middle school) and add the folded surprise questions to one of two ziploc bags labeled: “Current Events” or “Fun Topics.”
The host (me last night) then passes the bags to a person next to them who gets to choose a question from either bag. The host then times them giving them 2 minutes to respond. Others just listen and do not comment. The Same Question, goes around the table where all are seated and each person gets up to two minutes to comment. If they choose not to comment the bags of questions moves on to the next person. When it gets back to the person who chose it originally, the floor is open to for discussion should the group desire. There is one unspoken rule…. treat everyone and their opinions with respect whether you agree with them or not! What is this event? Is it a game? Is it rules for polite conversation? Is it a social gathering? Is it conversation for intellectuals? To me it is a little of all and more as it engenders a lot of fun and a potential creation of friendship and camaraderie among all types of interesting informed people. It seems to attract a wonderful variety of people whose tolerance and respect for others in conversation, should be a model for our nation’s future growth.
One question, at last night’s gathering, that took me by surprise read “What was the best thing that happened to you this last week?” I could not answer it at first, though I picked it from the bag, so I chose not to answer then but to pass it to my left to Gerrie and then answer it when it came back to me and I had more time to think (another rule: you may pass on a question if you wish). Listening to my companions share their experiences reminded me of what I would like to share (attitude) so I did when the question finally came back to me. I talked about my Brother-In-Law, Jose.
This is what I said in response to the paper question: About four years ago, Jose’s wife had a stroke. It left her with a paralysis of the left side of her body (she was left handed) and it left Jose with a major challenge at nearly 70 years of age. However, Jose is a model of the potential plasticity of human beings (their resilience) and, to me, one of my heroes in life! Jose and his wife Margie came to stay with us for a weeks invited vacation at our cozy 2 bedroom villa in Florida (they live in NJ). When we took them to the airport a week later, on the way home I had trouble not crying. I already missed them too much! Jose, who always loved people and being an entertaining host, taught me a lot about enjoying life, every day. Jose never complained about the extra work he had to assume to help his wife dress, walk, shower etc., no he actually made it mostly fun. Jose and I like to cook so we cooked nearly everything (we never ate out) together in the kitchen and had a great time together doing it (I was the sous chef). We took long walks together, when my wife gave Jose a break from his well accepted responsibility as she spent time with her sister (his wife). We had a lot of fun talking as we walked for miles around our community. We had a dance party one evening at our community social center and there you could see the magic that Jose had created. Though his wife could not truly “dance” fluidly (as she had to drag one leg and hold on to him for support) he got her up on the dance floor many times and held her hand while dancing with twice as much enthusiasm. He had his joy reflected back at him by the unceasing laughter and smile on her face. When she was tired and sat one out or if the music was just “too fast,” Jose often got up on the floor near her and danced with her walking cane (without being shy) and made her and everyone around laugh with his very apparent enthusiasm (at making his wife smile). His enthusiasm for life and joy in living was contagious! By the end of the evening, out of the hundred or more people at the event, many had come up to ask Jose to move to the community as they needed him there! Others had asked us to see if we could talk him into moving to our community. I wanted him and Margie to move down here too! It was no wonder that when we left him off at PBI airport and drove home, the air seemed to have been sucked out of the room in the car. My wife and I have a good relationship and we have fun neighbors and what I would call a good life. We are blessed; however, Jose had taught us all something. It was the plasticity of enthusiastic people who rose to the challenge of what others called pain and suffering and turned it into joy. Not that he does not get tired, not that he does not have challenging moments; however, he has chosen joy and surely makes that his life!
So what made the MeetUp fun? It was the attitude and intentions of the people sitting at the table with me. Like Jose, they decided that life would be fun, they chose to not let anyone’s opinions be cause for negativity but rather an opportunity to learn. They chose to treat each other with respect and Always Be Positive (an unspoken rule). They chose to talk from their heart with integrity and in so doing engender trust and respect from others attending. They chose to be light hearted and find the best they could. At that particular meeting, I don’t believe anyone choses “current events.” We were all tired of the political divisions that the media and elitist celebrities have been beating America with for months, since Donald Trump’s election. It was a good decision for all of us. However, even when we do choose “current events” which is most often the choice, this group has learned to discuss important issues in a positive and respectful manner. If anyone cannot follow this rule (and that is very rare), they are politely asked to change their attitude or not return. In 6 months of attending, this has only happened once.
Finally how is there hope for Millennials and America? From what I have seen of Millennials (in my case being a senior citizen it is mostly from the media) they are not impressive. They seem to have lost the “Power Of Positive Thinking” and dwell in fear, anger, anxiety and frustration. They could use a lesson from Jose about how to deal with change in a positive way, one that too many parents and college professors seem to have let die years ago. Yes, a reward for “showing up” is illogical! They don’t seem educated despite attending educational institutions for that purpose. They also don’t seem to have the communication skills and social graces to lead a nation. They cannot even talk to each other over dinner as they would rather text each other while sitting at the same table. On the other hand, each generation seems to be molded by the challenges of its times. It makes them often look odd and clumsy to their older fellow Americans, those of the last generation. This made me think about how my father could not understand my generation, which seemed infected with the dream state of the “The Hippies.”
Driving home from the meetUp, I thought about how odd the millennials were from my perspective as a baby boomer. Some that I knew told me they did not date, Yikes that shocked me! They did not have girlfriends, they did not “go steady” and they did not plan on marrying or rushing to have kids as we did. Instead they met on social media and sent message to each other painted with Pound signs like ” #BORED, what should I do?‘ ” On the the other hand the millennials have adapted to change with plasticity that is inborn in youth and fought for by adults. They use social media (despite its horrific illusions and deceit) to form groups and keep in touch in some ways. They use their phones almost like a rudimentary telepathy to track and share what is going on in each others life so they don’t ….miss out. Many of them still “go out” in groups and dance together, though that may be becoming more of a GenX phenomena.
Years back, Orson Scott Card wrote the Sci-fi book Ender’s Game. It was a story of how a teenager who was good at playing war games was seduced by the military to join a “competition of gamers to end all games.” In reality the war game he thought he was playing on simulators was a real war and the alien race of insect like creatures (the misperceived enemies) he succeeded in annihilating were a real live civilization! In essence, his growing up a a nerdy gamer, empowered his civilization to win a war against what was perceived as dangerous enemies. The lesson? Growing up different is a way to adapt to a changing technological and cultural environment. Because it is different from the last generation does not make it wrong or weak, it just makes it strange. Yes they do appear as cry babies but we will see what happens when push comes to shove and they must make it in the real world (out of college). I would not write them off too quickly. On the other hand, in Ender’s Game the reality was that because of barriers to communication and cultural misunderstanding, Earth did not recognize that the Aliens were capable of peaceful interaction with humanity. We missed out on an opportunity to expand our horizons and share knowledge with a whole new life form. It concerns me that communication via FaceBook, Twitter and other media may do the same for our nation, especially as it is more and more in the hands of Millennials. At the same time, if we baby boomers could detach from our TVs and TV Dinners to date, dance organize and keep America running, perhaps the same will be true for the most recent generation. Keep your fingers crossed and be positive!
The Supreme Court’s decision to unfetter corporate political contributions needs to be reversed by local action!
Bernie Sanders had a point in his quest for the reversal of Citizens United in 2012 but not the method to attack it. Bernie wanted a constitutional Amendment to reverse Citizens United; however using a sledgehammer to kill ants is not logical as it consequent side effects are too widespread. Bernie’s approach was just as illogical even though his goal was good for America.
Giving corporations the rights of human beings, specifically freedom of speech but defined in cash, makes no sense to most Americans. In fact it is odious! The citizens of America have forever fought the battle of efforts by the corporate wealthy to establish a corporatocracy and before corporation’s existed by those who wished for a Plutocracy.
Five years of the resultant legislative action and reaction (after Citizens United) is hard to reverse, just as will be the failed attempt at national healthcare by those who legislated for ObamaCare. ObamaCare may be changed in name and in structure but its roots like that of many invasive plants will never be fully removed.
In the case of Citizens United, a grassroots effort to chip away at its foundations accross America may be our best bet. There is clear precedent for this approach when you consider the results of efforts to maintain the Right To Bear Arms and those of the movement to allow for Gay Marriage. Here is a story much on this point from The Atlantic…..
Who Makes Your Electronics And Missiles?
On September 29th 2011, 6 years ago, China launched its Tiangong-1 Space Lab (video). Launched on a Long-March rocket from the Gobi desert, it was the first step towards the creation of a Space Station to be completed in 2020. The year 2020, is the year that the international space station was to be scheduled for decommission (better known as the junk yard). If a new one is not built, or something done to extend the life of the current one, this will leave China with the Earth’s only space station!
China is not currently part of the International space station project because the US had refused to let it become part of the project. One reason is because of US concerns about China’s military goals for space. Not at all unreasonable.
If you recall, it was building roads that helped the Roman Empire expand and become a historic power. Through history the power of transportation, communication and technology has been an asset in times of war or even cold war. If concerns about China are real, should they be making most of our technology? The answer is obvious!
How far has China gone in the direction of dominating space? Almost nothing is seen in our news media regarding their achievements. Here are a few to ponder: In 2003, China put its first man in space, In 2008 China achieved its first space walk, In 2010 China launched its first unmanned mission to the Moon to map its surface (probably a precursor to a future lunar landing). Make no mistake about it, China has forward thinking leadership and plans to be a space faring power! China Aims to Become Global aerospace power, Says President Xi Jinping
It is clearly time to see that our government helps stimulate the growth of industry and technology in America. Leaving it to Transnational corporations, with no allegiance to America is tantamount to inviting a Trojan Horse into the Pentagon. Most of our very large corporations are more concerned about shareholder profit than America’s future. This myopia, is helping fuel the economic challenges of America. Stimulating local manufacturing and regaining President Kennedy’s focus on space is essential to the future of our children and our Nation’s existence. Lets hope that Donald Trump can see this future and work to restore our nation’s self reliance. Depending upon China for our technology is not a very wise decision for our long term survival.
Using YOUR money, YOUR work and YOUR organizations membership, MeetUp.com has commandeered all you have done to create social groups for their personal political, Anti-Trump goals!
If GMAIL would take your contacts list and start sending them Anti-Trump messages, Most of America would drop them for anything else. Well MeetUp.com appears to have done the same thing!
Consider this: Up until now every meetup gets equal placement on MeetUP.com’s landing screens (phone or computer) to give us all equal opportunity and not let anyone “steal” your groups members by advertising to them. Now however, EVERY log in on your phone will have the screen taken over by a screen that reads EXACTLY as the communists did to try to enlist financially troubled Americans. They are promoting a big display supposedly for “Democracy,” but really about the Anti-Trump financed radical elitists in America (Hollywood Celebrities and other extreme left wing causes they support).
MeetUp.com has apparently joined the Hollywood Elitist celebrities in attacking America & Its President! They have done this is a simple and not so subtle way by giving prominence to a radical leftists funded group #Resist!
It’s time to RESIST MeetUp.com’s political marketing to your organization’s members! There are other Social Meeting platforms that have not stolen your contacts like:

Virus research and the new tools of science allow the creation of the equivalent of Pandora’s Box. Once we release new life forms into the environment it is forever! Is this good or bad?
- We put up fences and got rustlers.
- We created banks and got bank robbers.
- We created computers networks and got computer viruses.
- We created genetic manipulation and we could get new killer bugs.
The question is should we as a world full of people allow any corporation or nation to modify living organisms that can never be removed from our environment, as in Pandora’s Box? Can we even stop this if we wanted to? One argument for genetic manipulation is that knowing what can be done by allowing it, we can be prepared. Another argument to consider the question “do the people who make the anti-virus for out computers help make the virus?” Surely evil people will realized that if they create the disaster they can sell you disaster insurance, the Mafia is living proof.
When the plane landed in Fort Lauderdale Florida, the pilot announced “Welcome To Paradise!” I was excited about the pilot’s vision, which seemed at first to be mine; but, concerned about what I was running away from, what I was losing and how empty it might feel to be without contact with everyone I had known for so long!
I had sold my practice, my home, and nearly everything I owned to move to Florida. I had given up a handful of treasured friendships, a huge number of fun acquaintances and over 12,000 patients, many of whom I knew by name and personal history for nearly 40 years.
I flashed on visions of the forest of friendships I had just willfully been transplanted away from. For moments these thoughts made me imagine images of being a space traveler marooned on a distant, beautiful but alien unpopulated planet, perhaps Mars.
As we drove to our new home using a navigator to guide us along unfamiliar roads, I thought that I felt for moments like the character in the story “The Martian” must have felt. Had he felt lost, lonely and wondering what tomorrow would be like as I did now? There was a big difference, of course, from the situation of that of “The Martian” in that we were surrounded by people and a safe environment but what about my soul’s environment? Like the Martian I had lost all that makes living life meaningful such as the relationships, trust, respect and common history. I had lost what had grown up over many years as a forest of “friendships” with different degrees of nomenclature like casual, personal or family. More than that I had given up my relationship with my community, my practice of Holistic Eye Care, something I had invented, nurtured and grown into a giant tree. One so strong that it had survived the financial storms of 3 major recessions over nearly half a century.
It made me wonder what forces had created such momentum that I had been willing to leave the beautiful creation of a lifetime that had for some reason now become toxic? Something I occasionally viewed as a wasteland of destruction. There was a lot to think about. There is also no simple answer. Some have tried such as the book “Who Stole My Cheese?” But I was not looking for a description of change I was looking for socio-economic forces that had reshaped and redefined my world. Seven months later I think I have found it. I am a sci-fi writer because I am always searching for answers to question such as: what is it that creates or destroys civilizations? Why destruction and creation are so intimately intertwined? And finally does it have to be so? My own experience was now helping better define these questions and paint images of possible answers.
I think that the catalyst of the torrentuous socio-economic forces, that I had experienced so recently, might be described as the loss of responsibility and connection between the people that make up a civilization. I thought back on 40 years ago, when I first moved to Brewster in upstate NY, where my office had been. I recalled a farmer who had walked 3 miles to my office for his eye exam because he said, “It did not warrant starting his truck just to drive 3 miles.” Times were different then. It was not that he walked so far so casually and so unpressured by time, that was just a description of what had changed since then. That was just a flavor of the essence of the ethos of that era that you could easily taste. What was so different was that this farmer would soon know me by name as he did hundreds of the other people whose lives he touched every day! Keep in mind the phrase “whose lives he touched.”
40 years ago as I started my practice, I became enamored with the people I served quite quickly. Apparently they with me too. Six months after opening my doors to what I expected to be a weekend, part time practice, I was working full time. I had to give up my other two part time offices. The force that made this change was the large families of Irish and Italian heritage Americans who were soon to become my extended family. They got to know me personally, like me and trust me. With that relationship, the whole family had to come see me and eventually most of the town. We were all in this life together!
What changed 40 years later to make me move and give it all up for a promise of paradise but a loss of family? In my opinion, the essential force is the loss of connection between people and the loss of responsibility for your actions or inactions. From the viewpoint of my profession, we saw the destruction of the doctor patient relationship created by the third party payors. When people came to me 40 years ago, the service was thorough, affordable and easily paid for in cash. When I left, the service was more mechanized, far less personal and no longer affordable in cash. In fact is is the biggest disaster of American health care history.
I believe in the system of free enterprise and capitalism (with some caveats). It has certainly worked for me for a long time. I believe that the strength of any economy is small business and entrepreneurship. Why? Because I believe that it is the knowing of your clients and responsibility to your community that keeps you on the straight and narrow path. The path that for many American’s is defined on Sunday Mornings under the multicolored shafts of light falling through stained glass windows. Take away this connection and it is easy for Chinese factory owners to adulterate milk or put dangerous materials in sheet rock. It is easy for Monsanto to create toxic herbicide that will likely soon be proven to have caused cancer in millions of people while rationalizing that they are the Horn Of Plenty that feeds civilization. It is easy for congressmen to take millions of dollars of bribes while the Wall Street rich devour the lifeblood of America’s workers with carnivorous creations called derivatives (otherwise known as gambling).
Where there is no personal responsibility, there is no community. There is nothing to lose but the smell of fresh minted money and what temporary pleasures it might buy. IBM, in some ways started this revolution and they became named for it. IBM stood for “I’ve Been Moved” as in from my family, my home and my community for money’s promise. We were willing to give up what makes life meaningful for the casino of promises that were never fulfilled.
Somehow there has to be a way of connecting people to people and make business, its owners and its workers intimately responsible to the communities of people they serve. We must recognize that each of us holds the lives for our country’s citizens in each others hands. Not because it was so warm and fuzzy to be in the community I helped grow with me 40 years ago (though that is a good enough reason) but because otherwise the landscape of life becomes so toxic that the best of us will leave. The vast majority of us do not work for money, we work for personal satisfaction, respect and a feeling of self worth, personal value. The majority of employees leave a job not because of money but because they are not treated with respect, listened to and praised for their achievement.
My experience, is that with the creation of self respect by serving a community of people we know, enough money always follows. You also get to share the wealth around if you don’t live in fear of a lack of money to cover expected personal economic crisis. America has proven this for over 200 years. “Too big to fail” is not an option, it is a symptom of the bribery and corruption of our government (mostly our representatives) on all levels that allows for a lack of responsibility. It is enough to make a person run away from their home and seek a new start almost anywhere else. It is something to write about, for me.
I believe in what Walt Disney said years ago, “It is better to entertain with the hopes of educating, then educating with the hopes of entertaining.” This is my dream and what I hope to inspire in others I get to form a community with.
